A different Roman Empire.
Forget images of serried ranks of lorica-clad legionaries. Forget the stories of the deeds of Caesar, Pompey and Sulla. Forget a mighty Empire that rules from the deserts of Arabia to the hills of northern Britain.
Caesar has been dead for half a millenia. And the Empire has changed beyond recognition.
Britain, an island on the edge of the world was always troublesome. As Italy itself was ravaged, it was the first part of the Empire to be lost. It did not fall through conquest - but by a letter. As the Emperor Honorius hid in his Adriatic fortress and as Rome itself fell to the barbarians, Britain was cut adrift, the Britons told to `look to their own defences'.
Britannia - the oldest and largest group reenacting this period portray life in the final years of Roman Britain. We seek show how Romano-British people of the opening years of the 5th Century lived and fought as Britain descended into a patchwork of kingdoms and territories.
In addition to this we portray others who settled, invaded and fought for land on this island - particularly the Germanic peoples.
